Sleep Avatar is a telematic installation that sets up a conceptual model of self-surveillance and manipulation of a sleeping body by WWW based community. In the experiment, a body deliberately submits itself to be matter of observation and manipulation in its most vulnerable state: during the sleep. The web and site-specific installation provides the platform to a community of 6 elected members that are in charge to responsibly manipulate the temperature levels in the bed and provide a stable environment for the body to sleep. At the same time all the data: imagery, temperature oscillations and conversations is monitored by the system.

It is an experimental process that explores the defamiliarisation of an unaware body interfaced with a community of users via the website. In the experiment the avatar integrates his body as part of the circuitry of the web, the web interface provides a interactive platform in which the members can communicate between themselves, make decisions and adjust the environmental conditions of the avatar in real time. However, the system itself is a framework of subversion given the autonomy the community members have to generate involuntary biofeebacks on the sleeping body.

Emphasizing vulnerability and submission, Sleep Avatar discusses issues that emerge from the encounter of unexpectedness with entropy, affect and evil desire, constitutive parts of human collaboration. Pushing the relationship between the avatar and the community to the limits: complex information unfolding complex experience. Another dimension that Sleep Avatar unfolds is the extreme pervasion of technology,
communication and information systems through ubiquitous media in selfhood. Existing
as an alternative conception to SignalHijack: a free-media platform able to reversely broadcast signals to wireless video systems.
